Red Moon In Venus by Kali Uchis Album Review

Columbian singer Kali Uchis has released her fourth studio album titled Red Moon in Venus. The album brings a refreshing twist to modern music with its nostalgic, soulful, and romantic songs.

The title Red Moon in Venus is quite fitting to the album's theme. Venus refers to the planet of love, romance, and beauty. While the Red Moon encapsulates energy intended for the album according to Kali Uchis. She states in NPR: "I felt like red encapsulated the entire body of work. And the moon — I'm guided by the moon.”

The entire album feels like a magical romantic journey and is very cohesive from beginning to end. Kali Uchis is poetic and professes love throughout the album’s entirety contributing to that soulful nostalgic sound. As well as her known appreciation and admiration of 1960s' soul and doo-wop. She has been known to openly admire the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Curtis Mayfield, and even Selena.

This album is Kali Uchis English dominant album she is known to alternate between releases from having a Spanish album.

The album starts with …in My Garden… which is an ethereal start to the album where we get breathy alluring vocals from Kali. The song introduces us to the theme of the album - love. It smoothly transitions into I Wish You Roses which Kali has said was inspired by Joe Bataan’s I Wish You Love, Pt. 1. I Wish You Roses is one of the powerhouse songs off the album it has amazing lyrics along with the dreamy vocals.

We have another beautiful dreamy song titled Love Between… which really coincides with the Venus theme. All Mine, Fantasy (featuring Don Toliver) and Deserve Me (featuring Summer Walker) highlights Uchis’ R&B side and blends with her soulful style nicely. Como Te Quiero Yo and Hasta Cuando pay homage to her earlier albums with ethereal soulful Spanish ballads.

We even get Moral Conscience and Not Too Late capturing Kali’s spiritual side. Overall this album blends in a very cohesive manner Kali Uchis’ style: ethereal and sultry vocals, spiritualism, nostalgic soulfulness, and her blend of Spanish singing and writing with English. The album is a beautiful composition and is very unique within the era of the music.

Kali is now on her tour and was just at Coachella for her second time. I got the chance to see her Weekend 2 performance where she debuted her newest Spanish ballad with really powerful and beautiful vocals. Her set design, choreography, and dancers were really on par with the Venus and Goddess vibes she had within the album. Her outfit seemed to pay homage to Selena.

Kali is a true leading star in this era of music she has her own vibe and essence like no other and is shining bright.
